Recovering from a broken bone can be a lengthy process, but don’t think the journey is complete just because the cast comes off. Casts are great at keeping you immobile to allow for healing, but being immobile for so long can cause muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, and lack of coordination and control.
Once the bone has healed, it’s time to focus on returning the muscles around the injury back to their normal function. A physical therapist can help provide the guidelines to safely increase movement, mobility, and strength to an area that’s been compromised from immobility. Without fully healing from a break and the resulting weakness that follows, patients are more likely to re-injure the area. So take the time when the cast comes off to fully heal, and get those muscles back in shape and supporting your movements.
