Planks are a great core exercise. Although this exercise may seem easy, it’s actually very challenging when performed correctly. Planks help strengthen the core by teaching the body to brace with the core muscles: the abdominals, back, and shoulders.
To perform a plank, lie down on the floor on your stomach and place your elbows directly beneath your shoulders. Bracing your core, and pulling your bellybutton to your back, rise up onto your toes so that your weight is evenly distributed between you forearms and toes. Be sure to keep your body in a straight line–your butt should not sag or stick up.
Work your way up to holding a plank for 30 seconds.
